Helpful Tips from Professional New Orleans DJs

Does the Bride and Groom really enjoy the music? Wedding General Party Tips

A lot of DJs have many good suggestions of what music should be played at weddings, how to select a good DJ and what is the perfect wedding songs. And like them I also have many suggestions and opinions about these subjects. I have been a Disc Jockey for over twenty five years and I have seen my share of things that really went wrong. Brides changing venues a day before the wedding, fist fights, Bridezillas, food poisoning, Bride and Grooms and Mothers arguing, police busts, and Brides asking me what song should I choose for the first dance ?

When sitting down to think of what to write in this article I was perplexed. What do I write about? Of course I can make a whole bunch of suggestions about music selections, DJ selections, and funny embarrassing events. In hind site when looking back I realized Does the Bride and Groom really enjoy the music at there Wedding? Maybe from looking at it in the worst perspective of the outside looking into a brides planning the wedding, organizing it running around with there heads cut off. Shelling out tons of cash for large venues with 25 people at the event. What if I can make some better suggestions and give opinions on what would make a Bride and Groom enjoy the music at there own event. That is the purpose of a wedding, it is the celebration of a union between to partners whom love each other, keyword here is celebration.

To answer the question of what songs to select for the first dance no DJ can make that selection and there are tons suggestions. Your not on your own, just think about what do you feel in your heart, think of the words that describe your best friend for the rest of your life and then Look Up the lyrics to the songs that suite those feelings. More times then I can count those clients pick the perfect song for their first dance. Most often when no one asks the question and select a song that the title, or music has influenced their decision. The result, someone laughing, people looking at each other, and sometimes they look directly at the DJ as if its his fault what songs was selected.

I have had my fill of the best, worst and funniest song to be selected to play. But, I always wanted to tell everyone, that selecting the right song or songs during the reception, should not be very difficult if you follow a few tips. This will help in the selection of the tasteful and appropriate songs at the right time for the right occasion. I promise that its really not that difficult.

Lets start with the first tips, music selection. If your thinking too hard about it, you have already started off wrong. Let the DJ play, he has the experience to select most of your music. He knows the crowd, he knows the popular tunes, for the appropriate genre. At the least this is what you are paying for, just let him know what type of music is of your interest IE country, rock, top 40, or any special requests. If you think it is vulgar or inappropriate to be played in public, it sure is. Most often with newer music today has a lot of suggestive language and a curse word or more in the lyrics. Of course these types of songs you may like and your DJ has the radio edited version with the curse words taken out. But, you need to remind yourself that several family members including grand parents, aunts, uncles or from a conservative generation with greater values. Although it would be funny to see granny on the floor poppin. Keep it in the club, not at the Wedding.

This is an important tip if your at a birthday party for a 12 year olds, The Chicken Dance, Hokey Pokey, Macarena, YMCA, Locomotion and The Limbo Rock are the perfect songs. If your at a wedding it is not, so keep the kiddy songs for the birthday party. Im sure that DJs love to play these songs and they are quite entertaining, but if your wanting a sophistication and elegance, no Chipmunks at all and dont Let Them Dogs Out as well. Of course a Conga song would not hurt, but only after the toast has been toasted and everyone is well toasted.

A List of songs that are about depression, addiction, tragedy, breaking up and even stalking.
Every Breath You Take by the Police
Jesse's Girl by Rick Springfield
One by U2
Cuts Like a Knife by Bryan Adams
My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrisette

When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge-(FACT)prior to playing a concert made this song up on the spot, right after his girlfriend whom was sleeping around dumped him.

Here with Me by Dido
Billie Jean by Michael Jackson
One of Us by Joan Osborne
Don't Speak by No Doubt- A breakup song

King of Pain by The Police
Roxanne by The Police
I will Always Love You by Dolly Parton/ Whitney Houston
Uninvited by Alanis Morissette

This list is just compiled as inappropriate (twisted relationships, break up songs, etc,. What might be good for some, may not be good for others. There are many other songs that are considered as inappropriate and requested by clients, Love Stinks, You Gave Love A Bad Name, Tainted Love (all self explanatory).
Gold Digger, I Will Survive, Love Shack, Mony, Mony, The Roof is on Fire, Another One Bites the Dust. I just picked out the most popular, remember to check into the lyrics if you want the perfect wedding songs. Its all up to you what you want played at your celebration.

At Last a few more suggestions to enjoy that great wedding music. Have a wedding planner help to plan your wedding and coordinate the reception. This will allow more time for you and your loved one prior and during your event. A few good friends (bridal party) with set goals will help out during the event and make everyone else feel a part of the celebration.
When choosing an event venue, big is not always better. Ive found that a larger venues with smaller amount of guests seperates and keeps some parties from mingling, talking and dancing. Believe it or not most people are embarrassed to dance when looked upon, and all eyes are always on the dance floor. But never go to small as your guest will start to leave if they cant move. Think about celebration for everyone. Have the venue turn down the lights as soon as possible.
Last fun tip, If your going by timelines, forget it, it never works. When you plan that perfect fun event. Think about this suggestion for a minute. Having a sit down diner can cost a small fortune and waiting for everyone to eat, give toasts, cutting the cake, then doing your first dance can cut into a lot of valuable fun time. How about a buffet style meals, and appetizers, let everyone get there fill while the Bride and Groom take care of the pictures, cut the cake and do the first dances get it all out of the way first. Then the new couple have a nice diner while the party is on the dance floor, Toasts, bouquet, garter toss, can always be made and coordinated by the DJ anytime. Besides No one made any rules, you have not broken any laws and youve never really tossed etiquette out of the window. You had it your way, We do that in the south all the time. Youll have much more time to really enjoy the music and celebrate your special event, I guarantee.
